Interesting comparisons in an Italian study reported by New Scientist: Cigarettes more polluting than diesel exhaust.

This is the somewhat predictable result of measuring particulate emissions, i.e. smoke, that cigarettes are explicity designed to produce. Otherwise though, the fact that a diesel engine idling for 10 minutes burns 10 times cleaner than 3 cigarettes is rather notable.
